Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
