The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Producers Regarding Autism Spectrum Allegations

Judicial Proceedings
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump campaigning for the United States Senate, accused the drug companies of hiding potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the manufacturers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations concealed potential risks that the drug created to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action comes thirty days after Donald Trump publicized an unsubstantiated connection between using acetaminophen - referred to as paracetamol - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in children.

The attorney general is filing suit against Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the medication, the sole analgesic suggested for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "deceived the public by making money from pain and promoting medication without regard for the potential hazards."

The manufacturer says there is lacking scientific proof linking Tylenol to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, said.

The manufacturer commented that it was "very worried by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the welfare of American women and children."

On its official site, Kenvue also mentioned it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a proven link between using paracetamol and autism."

Organizations speaking for medical professionals and health professionals concur.

ACOG has said paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to address discomfort and elevated temperature, which can present serious health risks if ignored.

"In over twenty years of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, not a single reputable study has definitively established that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation causes neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the association said.

This legal action mentions current declarations from the previous government in claiming the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Recently, Trump caused concern from public health officials when he instructed pregnant women to "resist strongly" not to take Tylenol when sick.

The FDA then published an announcement that doctors should consider limiting the usage of acetaminophen, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who manages the FDA, had vowed in spring to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the origin of autism in a short period.

But specialists cautioned that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a complex mix of genetic and surrounding conditions - would be difficult.

Autism is a form of permanent neurological difference and disability that impacts how people perceive and engage with the world, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking the Senate - asserts Kenvue and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The lawsuit seeks to make the corporations "eliminate any marketing or advertising" that states acetaminophen is safe for expectant mothers.

The court case mirrors the complaints of a collection of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen in recently.

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, declaring research from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
